Meditation And Its Benefits
Meditation is essentially a hypometabolic state with parasympathetic dominance -different from sleep- that elicits physical and mental calm and is reported to enhance psychological balance and emotional stability.
Effects of Sahajaya Yoga on physiology :-

* One of the unique subjective correlates of the state of thoughtless awareness is the feeling of a temperature reduction on the hands and over the fontanelle area of the brain (top part which is soft in babies).
* This temperature reduction is not observed in other Yoga techniques that do not elicit the state of thoughtless awareness.

-Subjectively, Meditation is perceived as a state of deep relaxation of the body and mind, yet at the same time of enhanced awareness and alertness.
-Studies comparing experienced meditators compared to controls or short-term meditators have demonstrated physiological changes during Sahaja Yoga Meditation suggesting a wakeful hypometabolic state that is characterised by decreased sympathetic nervous activity, important for fight and flight mechanisms, and increased parasympathetic activity, important for relaxation and rest.
-This wakeful hypometabolic state with parasympathetic dominance has shown to be qualitatively and quantitatively different from simple rest or sleep.
-Meditation elicits physiological alterations that are indicators of deep parasympathetic activation and therefore physiological relaxation that has been related to stress relief and the prevention of stress-related illness, such as respiratory, hypertensive of cardiovascular disease.
-The reduction of physiological parameters of stress have been related to the alleviation of many disease processes and it is more and more understood that stress can be a trigger for a wide range of diseases from a mild backpain to severe mental illness.

Sahaja Yoga Meditation practitioners (16) show a significant drop in the skin temperature compared to baseline as measured on the hands (red line) compared to a group that rested who showed a typical increase in skin temperature that is normal during rest (green line) (12).
The drop in skin temperature is typical for the state of thoughtless awareness and is not observed in other Yoga Techniques that do not achieve the state of mental silence.
